Thermography examples of Infra Red Thermal Surveys by Epogee

Here are a few photo examples from recent thermal imaging surveys:

Underfloor Heating

We were asked to survey an underfloor heating circuit in a conservatory in order to find a leak. This was surprisingly easy - the leaking warm water from the burried heating coils shows up like a sore thumb! We were also able to locate the exit points where the leaked water left the building.

The next picture shows the location of the leak, easily distinguisable from the usual underfloor heating pattern. The leak is the large orange/yellow area near to the centre of the image, and you can make out the  actual pipes disappearing off to the right of the picture (appearing purple). The trail of purple colour rising upwards on the left hand side of the picture is the leaked fluid finding the path of lowest resistance as it trickles away.

This photograph shows an interesting effect near a bathroom air vent. It is looking upwards at a gable end wall. Usually, you will see clear heat loss around a bathroom air vent, but this one is unusual in that the heat seems to be 'leaking' into the wall of the building. Later, it was confirmed that the vent had not been sleeved - so the warm air from the bathroom was leaking directly into the wall cavity. Easily fixed and an instant improvement in a previously cold room.

A single-skinned house clearly shows heatloss from radiator on top floor close to the window on the left. Also in the shot is the heatloss from a woodstove and chimney flue through the gable-end wall.

Another thermal image of heatloss from two radiators on the top floor of a single-skinned house. Reflective panels behind each radiator would help conserve valuable heat.

The owner of this house had reservations about the cavity wall insulation, and there are clearly areas of the wall that have higher heatloss.

And here's the same house a little closer up. You can see the greatly increased heatloss from the one of the windows near the bottom of the image - where the pane is single-glazed, whereas all the others are double-glazed.

The picture below is a classic image which we often see of opening windows. The opening section of the left hand window isn't sealed properly when closed, allowing warm air to leak out. This leakage is evident as a brighter area along the top edge of the window
